Your first build doesn't need a workshop or a big budget. A few basic tools, one sheet of foam and a bit of patience will get you a long way, whether that's a chunky foam bracer, a magical-girl wand or a simple bit of armour.

Below is a starter kit that comes to £45.38, using prices from UK shops' websites (prices checked 27 September 2026, excluding delivery). Prices change and stock varies, so treat it as a guide, not a shopping list you have to follow exactly.

That leaves about £4.60 of your £50 for a spare glue stick pack, a second foam sheet or a bus fare to the shops.

What each item does

EVA foam is the classic cosplay material. It's light, cheap, cuts with a knife and takes paint well once it's sealed. At 5 mm it's thick enough for bracers, belts and simple armour, but still easy to cut. Thin craft foam sheets (Hobbycraft had small EVA sheets from 60p on 27 Sep 2026) are handy for details like trims and emblems.

A hot glue gun is the easiest way to start joining foam. It's quick and forgiving. Many experienced makers use contact cement for stronger seams (see "Things you can skip" below), but hot glue is fine for a first project.

A snap-off craft knife gives the cleanest cuts. Snap off a new section of blade often, because blunt blades tear foam and slip more easily.

A cutting mat protects your table and helps your knife last. A3 is a good size for most beginner pieces.

Sandpaper smooths cut edges and softens bevels. Use a coarser grit for shaping and a finer one for finishing.

PVA glue works as a cheap sealer. Brush on a few thin coats and let each one dry. Sealing stops foam soaking up paint and gives you a smoother finish. Mod Podge (£5 for 236 ml at The Range, checked 27 Sep 2026) does a similar job if you prefer it.

Acrylic paints are water-based, cheap and easy to clean up. Six colours go a long way once you start mixing.

A sewing kit is for the fabric side of a costume: hemming, fixing straps, sewing on elastic and emergency repairs at a con.

Wig care: you don't need to buy anything special yet. A wide-tooth comb you already own is gentler on a synthetic wig than a normal brush. Comb from the ends upwards and store the wig in a bag or on a stand.

Things you can skip (for now)

  • Heat gun. Great for shaping and sealing foam, but not essential for a first build. If you want one later, B&Q had the Mac Allister 2000W Corded Heat Gun MHG2000 at £18.70 on offer (was £22; checked 27 Sep 2026).

  • Contact cement. Stronger than hot glue, but it's solvent-based. The label on Evo-Stik Impact (£8 for 250 ml at B&Q, checked 27 Sep 2026) warns that it's highly flammable, may cause drowsiness or dizziness, and should be used "only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area". Leave it until you're comfortable.

  • Plasti Dip and other rubber spray coatings. Popular for sealing foam, but they're an extra cost you don't need at first. We couldn't verify a price for the branded product at a named UK retailer. Generic peelable rubber-film sprays listed on B&Q's website by marketplace sellers were £12.99 for 400 ml (checked 27 Sep 2026).

  • Rotary tools, respirators with vapour filters and fancy paints. Worth it later, but not for your first project, especially if you avoid solvent glues and spray paints.

Safety first

  • Craft knives: cut away from your body and fingers, always on the mat. Retract the blade when you put the knife down, and snap old segments into a sealed container, not the bin. Keep knives away from younger siblings and pets. Under UK law, shops can't sell most knives to anyone under 18 (gov.uk), so under-18s will need an adult to buy one.

  • Hot glue: the nozzle and the glue get very hot. Use a heat-safe surface, keep a bowl of cool water nearby for accidental drips, and never leave the gun switched on and unattended.

  • Heat guns: they get much hotter than a hairdryer. Never point one at skin, hair or anything flammable, and let it cool on its stand. Heat foam in short bursts in a ventilated room.

  • Fumes and dust: always read the label on glues and paints. Work with a window open, or outside for anything solvent-based. A dust mask like the one in our kit protects against sanding dust. B&Q describes this one as protecting against "moderate levels of fine dust and water based mists", so it won't protect you from solvent fumes. Ventilation, or leaving solvent glues out altogether, is the beginner-friendly answer.

  • Cons: check the con's prop rules before you build anything prop-shaped. Our guide UK Convention Prop and Weapon Rules (2026) has the details.

Tips for students and tight budgets

  • Split a foam sheet with a friend or your uni anime society. At Tyges, the 5 mm 1 m x 2 m sheet (£9.58 ex VAT) worked out about half the price per square metre of the 1 m x 0.5 m size (checked 27 Sep 2026).

  • Try EVA gym floor tiles. Lots of cosplayers use them for chunky pieces. They often have a textured side, and prices vary a lot by pack size, so compare the price per tile.

  • Make templates from cereal boxes before you cut into foam. Mistakes in card cost nothing.

  • Shop in person where you can, to avoid delivery charges, and keep an eye out for offers.

  • Charity shops are great for base clothes, belts and fabric you can take apart and reuse.
